Personal development, health and physical education

Personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE) is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.

According to the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), students are expected to participate in PDHPE for 300 hours per year in Years 7 to 10.

PDHPE provides students with opportunities to explore issues that are likely to impact on the health, safety and wellbeing of themselves and others – now and in the future. Students also participate in challenging and enjoyable physical activity, improving their capacity to move with skill and confidence.

In Year 11 and 12, courses available include:

  • Community and Family Studies
  • Exploring Early Childhood
  • Personal Development, Health and Physical Education
  • Sport, Lifestyle and Recreation Studies.

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education contributes significantly to the holistic development of young people. It provides opportunities for students to explore and analyse significant and relevant issues. The aim of PDHPE is to "develop student's capacity to enhance personal health and wellbeing, enjoy and active lifestyle, maximise movement potential and advocate lifelong health and physical health" (Personal Development, Health and Physical Education Years 7–10, 2016).

Students will be involved in learning 21st-century learning skills (communication, creativity, collaboration and critical thinking), problem-solving, research and investigation as well as moving, planning and participating in a range of physical activity.

At Cranebrook High School the PDHPE Faculty offers a number of electives for students in Years 9 and 10. These electives include; Outdoor Education, Physical Activity and Sports Studies and Ball Sports.
